As partial requirement for SPSE 6820, students will design a Faculty and Staff Development Wiki to assist colleagues, parents, community members, and administrators in building the background knowledge regarding:
ESL (second language learning) Laws, Legislation, and Legal Decisions
Second Language Acquisition--Learning in L1 and L2
Overview of SLA Approaches
Developing Literacy in the Regular Education Classroom and Home Environment
Krashen's Work
Promoting Input, Output, and Comprehension
Classroom Factors to Consider
Presenting a Total Picture and Integrated View of SLA
The Wiki should be designed in a manner so that it may be easily integrated into staff development workshops, sessions, or home use. Use this page and the examples provided (see left-hand menu and upper menu bar) to assist you in designing your Wiki.
Please begin setting up your Wiki at the beginning of the session/semester so that you may add as the session/semester progresses. Please check the course Calendar for specific due date.
Students who Completed SPSE 6800: If you already completed SPSE 6800, your Language Wiki is designed and in use. Just add the pages that follow for the Faculty and Staff Development component.
All Students Enrolled in SPSE 6820 should include the pages below. You may begin design and add to the pages as you complete each of the assignments.
The following components must be included in your Wiki:
Home (Opening Page): Begin by designing your opening page. Include a title, overview of the Wiki, targeted audience, and contact information. Remember to include a picture, avatar, or graphic of yourself.
ESL (second language learning) Laws, Legislation, and Legal Decisions: To begin the process of promoting background awareness of ESL, you will design a slide show that presents information on key laws, legislation, and legal decisions. This Wiki page should include a title, graphic, and brief overview/summary of the slide show along with the actual slide show file. Be sure to include a few links where faculty and staff may "read more about" the laws that have impacted second language learning. Last, be sure to include a footer consisting of a graphic and your contact information (SEE MODULE 1 FOR DETAILS).
Second Language Acquisition--Learning in L1 and L2: Set up the SLA page with a title and graphic. This page will include information regarding learning a first and second language as well as a comparison of the processes. You will add a graphic organizer that presents a comparison in order to continue to build awareness and background knowledge. Remember to include the footer -- graphic and contact information (SEE MODULE 2 FOR DETAILS).
Overview of SLA Approaches: Remember to set up the SLA Approaches page with a title and graphic. This page will include a brief and concise slide show presenting key approaches to second language acquisition. Remember to include a short summary of the slide show, the slide show file, and your footer information (SEE MODULE 3 FOR DETAILS).
Developing Literacy in the Regular Education Classroom and Home Environment:This Wiki page will include a set of resources that may be used by regular education teachers and parents for promoting literacy. Remember to set the page up with a title and graphic. Include the resources listed in the Module 4 Assignment Guidelines. Last, include the footer and related information (SEE MODULE 4 FOR DETAILS).
Krashen's Work: The Wiki wouldn't be complete without information regarding the work of Stephen Krashen! Set up this page with a title and graphic. Include "Wiki entries" that outline Krashen's Theory as well as each of the five hypotheses. Include at least two links where faculty and staff can read more about Krashen's work. Remember to include your footer (SEE MODULE 5 FOR MORE INFORMATION).
Input, Output, and Comprehension: Set up this Wiki page in the same manner as the previous pages with a title and graphic. This page will present information on role of input, output, and comprehension in second language acquisition. Begin with "Wiki entries" explaining what each of these items consists of. Add at least one "classroom tip" for each entry. Remember to include your footer information (SEE MODULE 6 FOR MORE INFORMATION).
Classroom Factors to Consider: Set up the Classroom Factors page with a title and graphic. Identify key issues that must be considered by regular education classroom teachers who typically work with second language learners during the regular school day. Consider issues related to ESL populations enrolled in your particular school as well as general factors to consider. Add an overview to your Wiki page describing the factors and content of the page. Design a one-page informational handout that may be distributed to regular education teachers, ESL teachers, or parents. Include at least two online resources. Remember to include your footer information (SEE MODULE 7 FOR MORE INFORMATION).
Presenting a Total Picture and Integrated View of SLA: This Wiki page should include a title and graphic. This page is presentation of your own integrated view of SLA via the completed graphic organizer. Your organizer must be copied/pasted to the page OR you may create a table and enter your information. DO NOT ATTACH A FILE. Think of this page as your personal reflections as well as a "lesson to others" who work with second language learners. Remember to include your footer information (SEE MODULE 8 FOR MORE INFORMATION).
Design: Each page must include a heading as well as graphics. Each page must also include a footer (see above). Remember to organize your information in a manner that is "user-friendly."
